Service and Setups

Have you found you don’t bother to pick up your guitar or bass to play because it is hard work?… Tough to play?… Sounds dead & uninspiring? You may have even chucked it in the loft or under the stairs for these very reasons!

Because wood is a natural product, it’s properties change with time. It seasons and dries, therefore it is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. For these reasons it flexes and moves, making your guitar horrid to play because the action, (string height) is either too high, making it hard work or too low, resulting in string rattle and buzzing, or sometimes completely unplayable.

Having your guitar or bass set up properly will make a huge difference to its playability and tone ….So what’s involved?

It depends on the type of guitar and how bad it is, but generally, most of the following procedures are usually undertaken:

  • Old strings removed
  • Fingerboard straightened
  • Frets levelled
  • Frets re-profiled, dressed & polished
  • Fingerboard cleaned & oiled
  • Machine heads & hardware tightened
  • New strings fitted & stretched
  • Bridge height adjusted
  • Nut height adjusted
  • Truss rod adjusted
  • Intonation set
  • Pick ups adjusted
  • Electrical components cleaned
  • Final clean and polish
  • Tune and test

Guitar repairs

A broken headstock doesn’t necessarily mean your guitar is destined for the tip.

This type of repair has to be inspected to quote a price or viability.

We do not specialise in paintwork or finishes, therefore structural repairs such as broken headstocks are usually sound, but not often pretty!

Cracked or broken nuts are repaired or replaced regularly.

We can replace and sometimes repair broken machine heads … refit loose strap buttons.

Electrical work

We undertake pick-up replacement, rewires, jack socket & potentiometer replacement.

We can undertake a basic amplifier service I.E. Clean, lubricate or replace noisy or broken sockets and potentiometers.

For more serious electrical problems, we can refer you to a qualified electronics engineer, who will be able to help.

We complete most set ups between 3 & 4 days. If you need it sooner, please ring or email to book your instrument in advance.
